Internet... How I Love Thee... Let Me Count The Ways...

I am slightly ashamed to say that most everything I do these days is on the internet. This is not an entirely bad thing, but my dependence on it might be classified as slightly sad to some. I'm a full time mom, student, and employee so the time saving benefits of the internet are pretty fantastic to me, and I take full advantage of them whenever possible.

Let's break it down list style, here goes nothing... how does Kat Fay use the internet?

To read: Yes, to read. I download my e-books to my nook through the internet, and then read them on the device. I love a good old fashioned book, but the sad truth is that my purse is now too stuffed full of spare clothes for a toddler, snacks for a toddler, toys for a toddler, and last weeks snacks that the toddler crumbled up as a joke... that carrying around two books (what if I finish one? don't judge!) just doesn't work anymore. I have over 100 books on my nook, and having the electronic book has only heightened my reading problem. (Logophile over here... gotta love the written word)

For School: Well.. .obviously. I work 50+ plus hours a week, and every other waking moment is spent attempting to enjoy the daylight hours I Have with my child. So when the sun goes down, and she crawls into bed (almost willingly), I use the internet to complete my classwork and "go to school" online. I could not be more thankful for online classes, and the freedom it allows me to earn a living and not spend all my other time in a classroom. I may be sleep deprived, but its worth it!

For Work: Part of my job is checking emails from my other offices, so I do a lot of that online. Also - everything I Do billing wise for the office is sent electronically via the internet, so if the doctors want to get paid they better pay the internet bill!

Communication: Whether its for work, or pleasure I send about 30 emails a day. I also communicate via facebook, and internet on my phone with friends and family from all over the world. The internet has allowed me to be able to keep in touch with everyone i want in my life, whether they live down the street or down East 20 in South Carolina. I just sent an email to a friend in Hong Kong, that she is now reading at 8 am... tomorrow morning? I believe? Or 8 am today, one of those. Fantastic.
Email, facebook, text messaging, facetime, and other such forms of communication have also helped me carry on a relationship with a fantastic gentleman who is in med school right now. We don't get to physically see each other often, since I have so much going on and so does he obviously (people who willingly pay to submit themselves to med school are insane - the workload is like three full time jobs), and this is how we stay connected and keep from losing that spark. We don't constantly talk or facetime, but just little things here and there that let the other person know that a) im alive, and b) i miss you. It's just a great thing to have, and I don't know if we would still be together if it wasn't an option.

Banking: The day I figured out that I could not only check my account, but deposit checks and transfer money on my phone and the internet, might have been a close second or third to the happiest day of my life. I hate bankers, with a passion (don't ask why because I really don't know) and avoiding that overly excited and particularly salesman-like middleman makes my day. Take that CHASEbank, I don't even have to walk inside anymore!

To blog! I Have a rarely used blog on wordpress that I didn't put this entry in because I use that mostly for personal stuff and I didn't want to have schoolwork on it. But this is a link: http://viennawontwait.wordpress.com/

Shopping: I am slightly (majorly) addicted (I have a problem) to Amazon. Like... they email me if I haven't bought anything in a few weeks and ask if I'm okay. I ordered a book about mustache growing for a friend a few days ago, just because I could. Did you know amazon sells mustache bandaids? And mustache sandwich cutters? Now Tom knows, because with handy dandy two day delivery they arrived at his house yesterday. Is there an amazonloversanonymous? Because if online shopping is wrong I don't want to be right.

Lets see... how else do I use the internet...

Research  - on everything. Even things that I don't necessarily need to know (point and case: random snapple facts).

Self help - I am not ashamed to say that the internet has helped me become a better mom, through articles and studies, and advice from other moms who know exactly what I'm going through. These things being shared on the world wide web have helped me grow as a parent.

Entertainment - blockbuster online, netflix, pinterest, hulu, etc, etc, etc.... There is a website that I frequented in high school called bored.com.
Whilst waiting for call backs for interviews in the shorthorn newsroom (Shoutout) Phillip Bowden and I frequented Theonion.com for a laugh or two (because honestly interviews can just suck the life out of you sometimes - how many ways can you ask someone the same question to get a different answer? Ah!).

News - fake news  (hence theonion.com) and real news alike! Information is so readily shared online that almost all newspapers now have an online periodical that they keep up with as frequently as the printed news (if not even more frequently).

That might be about it. The world wide web is a fantastic place filled with useless information, useful information, and apparently an unlimited supply of mustache paraphernalia.
